It was known as the home of the Florida Cracker Cowboy and was originally named Allendale after Confederate Major J. H. Allen. Major Allen operated the first steamboat along the Kissimmee River - "The Mary Belle". The city was renamed Kissimmee when it was incorporated in 1883. The headwaters of the Everglades are considered to be located there.
